Seoul Subway Map Gets User-Friendly Redesign After 40 Years!
Foreign Travelers Planning a Trip to Seoul, Take Note.

The design of Seoul's subway map is getting a user-friendly makeover after 40 years. The city of Seoul has unveiled a new "Seoul Subway Map Design" created with input from experts in various fields. The previous Seoul subway map, with its design dating back to the 1980s, made it challenging to add new lines and was difficult to read, causing inconvenience for both Seoul residents and foreign tourists.

The new map features an international standard design called "Octoliner," making it easier for users to identify numerous lines and transfer stations. The Octoliner design allows only horizontal, vertical, and 45-degree diagonal lines, making it user-friendly and easily recognizable.

For transfer stations, the design has been changed to resemble a traffic light, displaying the colors of passing lines. Additionally, major geographical information such as city and suburban boundaries, Incheon Airport, the sea, and rivers have been incorporated to help tourists understand their current location in relation to the city.

Another notable feature is the use of color schemes and patterns that are easy for color-blind individuals, visually impaired individuals, and the elderly to distinguish. Results from experiments conducted with both domestic and foreign participants in their 20s and 30s showed that the time spent finding a station was reduced by up to approximately 55%, and the time taken to navigate transfer stations was shortened by up to approximately 69%, thanks to the new design.
